Libera Nos is Latin for "free us" or "deliver us" and is part of the Catholic Mass where we ask God to deliver us from evil and grant us peace. It might seem odd to some people that we seek freedom through belief in God. After all, isn't religion about having a whole lot of rules that limit what we can do? Not really, because for one thing a lot of what we see as freedom in this world is an illusion. We have been led to believe that increasing freedom from the restrictions that used to prevail in society would make us happier, but looking around and reading the news headlines I don't see much evidence. To take one example, the sexual revolution was supposed to free us from the old Victorian conventions; now we have a large percentage of children born to single parents who then have to struggle to bring them up. Is this the kind of freedom we are looking for?
